CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – More than half a million people across the region participated in the earthquake ShakeOut drill this week, as the drill prepares the student to be ready at a moment's notice. Earthquake Program Director Jeff Briggs talks about the importance of being prepared at all times for the possibility of an earthquake.

“The New Madrid Seismic Zone, centered in southeastern Missouri, is the largest active seismic zone in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains,” Briggs said. “Many people don't realize the risks, but they are real. We see more than 200 measurable earthquakes every year, many of which are too small to be felt.

Briggs noted that the New Madrid Seismic Zone has a history of large earthquakes, pointing to major events that the Bothell area witnessed more than 200 years ago. “Experts tell us it's only a matter of time before another major event happens,” he said.

Unlike other natural disasters, earthquakes strike without warning. “Floods and winter storms give you time to prepare. But with earthquakes, you don't get that advance notice,” Briggs said. “That's why it's so important to know what to do in advance.”

When an earthquake strikes, Briggs stresses the importance of the “drop, cover and wait” technique. “When the shaking starts, don't run. Get on the ground before it drops you, cover your head and neck, and hold on to something sturdy.

Briggs also advises residents to take preventive measures in their homes, such as securing heavy objects to prevent them from falling during an earthquake. “Look around your house and move heavy items to the lower shelves. And make sure the furniture near your bed is secured to the wall to avoid injury while sleeping.
