A 5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Jammu and Kashmir, causing panic

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, sparking panic among people who rushed out of their homes.

Data published by the National Seismological Center stated that the earthquake, which measured 5.8 on the Richter scale, occurred at 4.19 pm and its epicenter was in the border region between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 209 kilometers inside the Earth's crust. Its coordinates are latitude 36.62 degrees north and longitude 71.32 degrees east.

The tremors were felt throughout the valley, with people in some places fleeing their homes and workplaces.

Officials said that no loss of life or damage to property was reported from anywhere.

Earthquakes have caused major devastation in Kashmir in the past, as the valley is seismically located in an earthquake-prone area.

Historical records reveal that many times in the past, dwellings were completely destroyed by earthquakes in the valley. Traditionally, mud structures made in Kashmir were better suited to withstand earthquakes.

In modern times, reinforced concrete structures have replaced mud houses even in rural areas of Kashmir, making them more vulnerable to earthquakes.

On October 8, 2005, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake killed more than 80,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

The town of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was destroyed in a 2005 earthquake.

In addition, periodic tremors were felt in the Chenab Valley region of Jammu and Kashmir, including Doda, Kishtwar, Rasi and Ramban districts.

Geologists and seismologists have been so engaged in finding out the cause of these tremors that they have been reported in fairly good numbers over the past 15 years.
