A 5.8-magnitude earthquake has shaken northern Nevada, and aftershocks are expected for weeks

YERINGTON, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) – Aftershocks may continue for weeks after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook much of northern Nevada and parts of California on Monday. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, reported that some aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 2.0 to 3.0, with the largest exceeding 4.0.

Before Monday's quake, a fault line near Yerington registered thousands of small tremors, according to the Nevada Seismic Laboratory. This is the second major earthquake to hit the West Coast in the past week, after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami warning in Northern California.

Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, said there was no believed connection between the two quakes.

“Earthquakes have an effect on other earthquakes, like a big earthquake, like a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that happened in California. That sends waves through the Earth and other faults feel those waves,” Rowe said. “However, this type of earthquake occurs frequently in Nevada. Therefore, we cannot say that a magnitude 7.0 affected this earthquake in any specific way. But we do know that after a large earthquake, we see more other earthquakes.”

The laboratory noted that an earthquake of this size has not been recorded from this fault line in the modern era. The last earthquake exceeding a magnitude of 5.0 in the area was the Monte Cristo earthquake in Tonopah in 2020, which registered a magnitude of 6.5. Before that, the 2008 Wales earthquake measured 6.0, and Reno experienced a series of large earthquakes in the early 2000s.

Officials classify earthquakes as “major” when they reach magnitude 5.0, and those up to 6.0 are considered “really big” and potentially devastating. Monday's 5.8-magnitude quake was the largest in more than a century near a populated area, according to William Safran, network director at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

“It's been a really long time since we've had a major earthquake that was close to a major populated area, and even in Yerington, they haven't had an earthquake like this in 100 years. So, it's been a really long time,” Safran said.

In response, laboratory staff deployed additional seismic monitors near the Yerington fault line to collect more data.
