Aftershocks jolt Chenik Bay after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake

Residents of Shinyik are still feeling the effects of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck 75 miles south of the area on July 21.

“Until last night, there was an earthquake in the middle of the night,” said Rachel Allen, a commercial fisherman in Cheney Bay, on Thursday, July 30th.

When the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association issued a tsunami warning on the night of the earthquake, Allen and her crew got together and went to higher ground. It says the evacuation exposed problems in the area’s emergency infrastructure.

“Yeah, it was really scary and we had to sit there for a few hours,” Allen said. “We got up there and there was a lot of traffic. There was nowhere to turn. There are no communications as we all had to go. So we were all in the dark for what was the tsunami warning.”

Mayor Jay Ashby struggled to make phone calls to the state’s emergency center that night, which he says was due to poor contact with GCI cell towers – a common problem with Chigniks this summer.

“Our contacts with the GCI cells were horrific,” Ashby said. “I mean, it only takes 15-20 minutes to make a phone call to the country just to find out what’s going on.”

GCI found that the power amplifier used to send calls from Chignik to the satellite was overheating due to clogging of dust and pollen. Vice President of Communications Heather Handeside said a crew had been dispatched to repair the screens after the quake.

“We have worked with a local operator to manufacture and manufacture some screens to further reduce clogging,” said Handside. “We installed these, and things seem to have improved since then. We have sent a crew over there to check and see if things are normal.”

Handyside adds that the crew was on the ground on Monday, July 27.

The earthquake also had other side effects. A water pipe broke in Chinik Bay the following week. City officials say this may be due to the ongoing tremors. This repair was completed within a day and did not affect the village’s water supply. Residents also saw dust-generating rock slides across the bay.

Earthquakes caused by the earthquake are expected to continue in the coming months, but will decrease in frequency. This is according to state seismologist Mike West. Although there were no tsunamis that night, he said such incidents help communities prepare for future events.

“People should remain vigilant,” West said. “It is worth their time and effort to go into this exercise. Not all of these earthquakes will cause a big tsunami but any one of them is really capable. That earthquake, if it was a little different, was very subtle waves, it produced a very large tsunami.”

Ashby also wants to work with the state to build an evacuation shelter in the event of earthquakes or tsunami warnings in the future.
