Earthquake environmental justice groups aren't talking about it

On December 15, the earthquake was felt by many people in Syria. Seismic magnitudes registered above 3.0 on the Richter scale and could be felt 500 miles away. Natural disasters usually attract the attention of people all over the world. When earthquakes occur, humanitarian workers and supplies are sent to help. After hurricanes, organizations are issuing statements responding to the urgency of the climate crisis and virtual transitions away from fossil fuels. In Syria, what happened on December 15 was not an earthquake, but rather a massive air strike carried out by Israel in Syria. This constant bombardment is mutually destructive to daily life and the environment, as it continues to push the climate crisis further through the massive consumption of fossil fuels.

But where are the environmental organizations? Many of the organizations that normally issue these statements after “natural” disasters have remained silent. However, this was not a natural disaster – it was the countries that usually send “humanitarian aid” that caused this earthquake. This deliberate mass destruction came shortly after the United States dropped dozens of bombs within a few hours after the fall of Assad. The long-standing, puzzling silence of environmental organizations when it comes to US militarism does not represent any real commitment to climate justice. Perhaps the heaviest factor in their silence is blissful ignorance of the normalization of the painted “environment,” or fear of repression and the financial repercussions of taking popular anti-war positions. Regardless, the fatal outcome contradicts everything they claim.

The June 2024 UN report on the environmental impact of the Gaza genocide highlighted the catastrophic effects of the ongoing Israeli bombing on the ecosystem, water quality, air quality and soil quality in Gaza. Genocide not only causes ecocide, is not only parallel to ecocide, but is also a consequence of ecocide. Ecocide is a tactic of genocide. Long-term damage to Gaza's entire ecological foundation makes it increasingly difficult to sustain life. Life cannot continue without agriculture or clean drinking water. Now the United States and Israel are trying to repeat this cycle of destruction in Syria, just as they began in Lebanon.

No matter how hard the imperialism and war economy of Western powers try to create a lavish life for their beneficiaries at the expense of everyone else, it is fundamentally impossible to sustain life for anyone when the tools of war-making continue to destroy the planet. The dark irony is that the war economy is eating away at its creators.

The first 120 days of the Gaza genocide alone produced more emissions than 26 countries combined. Every new base created around the world pollutes the soil it occupies, harming the ecosystem and valuable biodiversity that is critical to sustaining life. As you build bases on occupied territories around the world, the army is literally moving towards survival.

Now, the United States and Israel are exploiting the instability in Syria to erode the country's territory and gain more prestige in a dangerous escalation against Iran. This is the latest development in a decades-long conquest of oil industry dominance that environmental organizations have long campaigned to shift away from. The United States has undertaken this disastrous project of extracting oil from the earth in order to extract more oil from the earth, destroying homes, families, and nations in the process, all while tripping over the possibility of destroying the planet through climate collapse. Or nuclear winter, or both.

Israeli-American-made bombs have killed many civilians in Yemen in the past few days. On the other hand, the “ceasefire” reached in Lebanon continues to be violated, with toxic bombs raining down on the country’s people daily, while fossil fuels shoot into the sky, effectively transforming the island states occupied by toxic US bases. To habitable places.

Since the fall of Assad, Israel has seized more land in Syria than it seized in the entire Gaza Strip. The more Israel and its allies encroach on this land, the more emboldened the American-Israeli regime becomes in its terrorism throughout the region and the greater its threat to our global future. The short- and long-term survival of the peoples of Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Yemen is increasingly threatened by environmental devastation as they struggle to prevent American-made bombs from continuing to destroy their homes every day. Is it possible to dispose of it in a way that blinds these NGOs to sacrificing themselves? The longer the escalation continues, the more emissions will be released from this catastrophe and the longer the destruction of vital biodiversity and indigenous welfare will last.

So, in the midst of this war causing complete environmental and planetary devastation, where is the mainstream climate movement? When the US military is the world's largest corporate polluter, consuming 4.6 billion gallons of fuel annually (77-80% of all US government energy consumption), how can its deadliest crackdown in years be ignored by those seeking to protect the planet? ? When bombs made by the United States register on the Richter scale, how can this not pose a threat to the environment? How is nuclear winter not a threat to the survival of the agricultural world? How can groups that claim to care about our safety not stand up to the deadly bombing campaign in Syria and potential war with Iran or Russia?

The anti-war movement from within the United States is at its strongest in decades. The majority of Americans want a ceasefire in Gaza. From within the belly of the beast, the environmental movement must realize that it needs to be part of this anti-war movement and push the United States to keep its hands off Syria. It must work to raise public awareness of the dangers of war with Iran. When we think about existential threats to the planet, environmental organizations must look at the environmental devastation caused by Israel and the United States and ask themselves why they have not done or said something about the elephant in the room.
