Belarusian opposition leader flees “tough elections” – BBC News
In the Belarusian presidential election, the opposition candidate has fled the country, declaring that the result was whitewashed. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said she left Lithuania for the benefit of her children as her supporters continued angry protests in the capital Minsk. The former Soviet Republic is often referred to as the last dictatorship of Europe. The country has been ruled by Alexander Lukashenko for more than 25 years. More than 80% of the vote has been declared the winner of the presidential election. But many countries have expressed concern about the legitimacy of the outcome.
