Federal workers' demobilization threatens the earthquake alerts in Washington

Twenty -four years ago today, Washington rocked the NISQULLY 6.8 earthquake, leaving hundreds of injured and damaged.

With the arrival of the anniversary, many are reflected in the lessons learned and the ongoing need to prepare for the earthquake.

A big awakening call

The back story:

On February 28, 2001, at 10:54 am, the Neskali earthquake struck depth under the Bugit Sound area. The earthquake lasted for about 30 seconds, as the buildings shook from Olympia to Seattle and outside. While no direct death was reported, more than 400 people were injured, and economic losses exceeded two billion dollars.

Seismologists noted that the earthquake occurred about 35 miles under the surface, which helped reduce the widespread destruction. However, the event was a blatant reminder of the region's exposure to seismic activity.

Changes in infrastructure and preparedness

One of the most important changes following the NISQULY earthquake is the demolition of the Alaska Wi -YV -Seattle road. The structure, which is already an exhibition of earthquakes, was replaced by 99 riyals to improve safety.

Since 2001, the seismic modernization amendment has been a priority for bridges, schools and other basic infrastructures throughout the state.
