Our absence in Myanmar is an earthquake in response: moral and strategic failure

It was a matter of time only before a disaster reached the test of realistic effects-and the cost of US foreign policy-President Donald Trump and Elon Musk for external assistance “reform” and reorganization. With the last weekend earthquake in Burma (Myanmar), we now have clear evidence that overcoming the United States Agency for International Development did not leave this country worse than it may be with American aid, but also that America itself is morally poor, its global leadership in the question, and its security is at risk strategically.

Despite the mistakes of the United States all over the world throughout its life – and in part it is often recognized, even if it was late – when the world looks at the United States, not only for its resources but to lead it. For decades, the United States was at the forefront of humanitarian response and disaster assistance, with the awareness that such efforts are not just generosity, but vital tools for diplomacy and national security.

But in the wake of the March 28 earthquake in Burma, the United States was largely absent, as it sent two million dollars and a team in response to the small emergency emergency. It is not only a failure of deep moral consequences, but also carries strategic costs that may create wireless tremors for years to come. To add an insult to the injury, President Donald Trump slapped his definition this week, a 44 percent tariff for Burma, depth of his economic and humanitarian crisis.

For decades, the United States was a “indispensable nation” for the international community in times of crisis-a position that in turn allowed the help of both needy, and to do the values that have moved the nation since its foundation, as well as to ensure that American interests, along with American values, serve well. Humanitarian aid was one of the few areas of assistance that the United States had a similar feature to its opponents.

However, the American ability to respond – just 70 days away or so in the Trump administration, is “in a state of chaos”, as a former assistant at the United States Agency for International Development for the Director of Humanitarian Affairs developed by Sarah Charles. The American ability to mobilize resources, coordinate international relief efforts, and a moral example, saved an endless life in the past, but in Burma this week, this leadership is missing. The earthquake has left thousands of dead and many others without shelter, food or medical care. And everything that plays in the midst of a civil war. The circumstances are so bad that the Myanmar army, which has long rejected the calls of the international community to end the war against its people, is giving help, although it is a call to take with a grain of salt given the reports that the military council continued to bomb its temporary people even after the earthquake until the latter is removed from the brutal schedule in the resistors the arm on a temporary fishing.

Scenes of suffering

Relief workers described horrific scenes of suffering, but Washington's response was lukewarm at best. In one of those twisted paradoxes of history – the type that would expel you from the separation of university creative writing – on the same day that the earthquake was destroyed by Burma, the employees of the United States Agency for International Development in the region were receiving notifications telling them that they opened fire.

The moral cost of this inaction is clear. Human suffering on this scale requires a response from those who have ways to reduce it. While local and regional actors intervened, their ability is limited. The United States has logistical power, financial resources, and the diplomatic influence of teams. Through failure to act, we send a message that the American leadership is conditional, selective, and in this case, absent.

In addition to the direct human cost, the absence of the American leadership in Burma is a strategic mistake. Disaster response is not only related to help. It is related to influence. In previous crises, American humanitarian assistance not only saved lives, but also building goodwill, deepening alliances, and promoting regional stability. I remember the United States' response to the Tsunami that swept Indonesia and the Indian Ocean in 2005. In response – immediately and without restriction or condition – we found it well, and we found it well. Tsunami's response to the negative views of America in that part of the world turned after the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and opened paths for diplomatic participation and partnership that paid profits for years to come. In other words, it is a vital tool for our national interests.

China, which is eager to expand its influence in Southeast Asia, has already moved to Burma to fill the void left by the American inaction. Pictures of relief workers in “Chinese search and rescue” clothes and “China Aid” throughout the press (and perhaps most importantly, on social media) in Burma and the region. Relief efforts in Beijing are not just charitable work; They are strategic investments. By interfering with the place where the United States is absent, China places itself as a dominant regional authority, which increases its impact on Burma policy, economics and military affairs.

Washington's absence weakens its credibility between the allies in the region. Countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines have long relied on the American leadership in times of crisis. If they see America retreating in Burma, where it was very active in the past to support its emerging democracy before the war, then these allies and American partners will wonder whether they can rely on Americans in their moments of need or in decisive joint strategic issues, including competition with China that the Trump administration claims a priority.

It was not too late

It was not too late for the United States to escalate. The strong humanitarian response-the leadership of the United States Agency for International Development, in coordination with regional partners such as Quad (a group of the United States, Australia, India and Japan), or ASEAN (Assembly dozens in Southeast Asian countries)-will prove that the American leadership is not in retreat.

In fact, the late recognition of the administration is necessarily to publish aid in emergency situations, logistical support and financial resources to ensure relief access can be seen by those in need as a recognition that the work of the American Agency for International Development is not “lost, fraud, and abuse”, as they often claim even during their conflict for evidence, but this already serves the national interest. The United States is partially supporting people so that they should not be immigrants fleeing to American beaches in the future. This response must be paired with diplomatic pressure on the Burmese Junta to allow full human access, and in the end, end the war and restore power to an elected civilian government.

Getting Burma – both in terms of strategic context or in supporting the Burma people in building a real and comprehensive federal democracy – has long been a long -standing goal for American policy makers. It is still a challenge. But there can be no doubt that inflation in the American Agency for International Development Programs, the lack of a strong response to the earthquake, and now, imposing definitions, is what appears to be Burma's mistake.

If Washington fails to act, the consequences will be long. The United States will have gave up the moral power and the strategic influence of opponents who will not hesitate to use this moment in their favor. In the end, America's absence in Burma will not be remembered as failing to help those who need desperate; It will be seen as a retreat from the global theater, which weakens America's values and interests.

Musk has stated several times that he realizes that DOGE will make mistakes, and that when these errors are indicated, DOGE will move quickly to correct them. The earthquake in Burma explained the cost of the attack at Dog on US State Department assistance. The only question now is whether Trump, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, and his stove and his stove will get to know him and correct him. Or if the costs will continue to focus. Burma earthquake may be the first disaster to test the Trump administration approach. But it will certainly not be the last.
