Our absence in Myanmar is an earthquake in response: moral and strategic failure

Washington's absence weakens its credibility between the allies in the region. Countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines have long relied on the American leadership in times of crisis. If they see America retreating in Burma, where it was very active in the past to support its emerging democracy before the war, then these allies and American partners will wonder whether they can rely on Americans in their moments of need or in decisive joint strategic issues, including competition with China that the Trump administration claims a priority.

It was not too late for the United States to escalate.
