300 buildings in Quetta ‘put lives at risk’

Geologists in Quetta revealed that nearly 300 buildings in the provincial capital were built according to construction rules, putting hundreds of lives at risk as the city is located in a high seismic zone.

According to Muhammad Qasim, in charge of the cell, more than 300 shopping centers, markets, squares, and shops have been built in Quetta against the building code.

“The British rulers, after the deadly earthquake that struck the mountain city in 1935, set a height of 30 feet for all buildings to minimize damage during the earthquake,” Qassem explained, adding that the Quetta Metropolitan Company (QMC) failed to implement the building code in Quetta as the department did not establish Monitor buildings during construction.

Dr Dean Muhammad Kakar, a well-known geologist, said Quetta is in the red when it comes to earthquakes.

“We have so far taken action against the owners of 40 buildings in Quetta, and geologists have warned of strong earthquakes in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan in the future,” he said.

Almost all areas of Quetta and Baluchistan are vulnerable to natural disasters in general and earthquakes in particular, Kakar added, taking into consideration future risks.

He added, “The British decided immediately to put in place a building law in Quetta to avoid future human losses in the event of any natural disasters and during the British rule, people followed the building code carefully, but gradually broke it.”

Haji Salam, a local businessman, said that the violation began without any review from the relevant departments, adding that “if you have the money, you can pass the plan to construct any high-rise building.”
