Shakira announces FIFA’s donation of $500,000 to relief victims of the Venezuelan earthquake

Shakira and FIFA have collaborated in a massive charitable effort to help thousands of children affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24. In a video posted over the weekend, the singer announced that FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund would allocate $500,000 to help provide resources to continue educating the country’s youth while recovering from the natural disaster.

“Today, millions of children are growing up without the education and opportunities they deserve,” the singer said in a video on Instagram in which she announced the initiative. “That’s why I’m so proud to support the FIFA Global Citizens Education Fund.”

The massive 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, which struck less than a minute apart last month, have so far killed more than 3,300 people, injured 16,000 others, displaced more than 17,000 people, and thousands of citizens are still missing.

In May, Shakira announced that she would donate 100% of the profits from her 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem “Dai Dai” to FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund, of which she and The Weeknd joined the board of directors last fall ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup; Shakira will also perform during halftime of the World Cup Final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey alongside Madonna and BTS.

“I am also pleased to announce that the FIFA Global Education Fund will allocate $500,000 to support organizations in Venezuela that are helping children whose education has been disrupted by this terrible tragedy,” she said. “We will invite trusted local organizations already leading relief efforts to apply for funding to help children return to classrooms, support teachers, and restore access to learning.”

In the caption accompanying the video, Shakira wrote: “In the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, education programs are likely to face long-term setbacks, disrupting the progress already made. As a supporter of the FIFA Global Citizens Education Fund, I stand with the children of Venezuela to help ensure every child continues to have access to education and the opportunity to learn, as the country rebuilds.”

She also encouraged Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron to commit to supporting the Fund, noting that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had already joined the campaign, while encouraging others to follow suit. “If you believe that every child deserves the chance to dream, please join us,” she said, noting that Venezuela-based organizations working to restore access to education can apply for funding through FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund here.

Last October, when Shakira and The Weeknd joined the Education Fund’s advisory board, the stated goal was to raise $100 million for education efforts around the world.

In the wake of the earthquakes, a number of artists, including Caracas natives Danny Ocean, Lily Ponce, Lasso, and Joaquina, made appeals for fans to send aid or turn their social accounts into resources for victims of the earthquakes, which caused widespread building collapses in the capital and in the coastal area of ​​La Guaira, north of Caracas.
