The 10th anniversary of the September 2010 earthquake gives the Hororata community time to reflect on what have been 10 years of change and how this has prepared them to be resilient in the face of COVID 19.

Richard Lang, President of the Hororata Community Trust, reviews what has been achieved at this time; “The Hororata Community Trust was formed after the earthquakes, at a time similar to what it is now with COVID 19, where the future was uncertain. We knew we would survive but the question was how to ensure the prosperity of the community and its people.”

This year on November 7th, the community will celebrate the 10th Horurata Highland Games. I started putting Hororata on the map, building community and fundraising.

“Games have always been about community spirit and pride; developing a strong identity, a sense of place; it is about the well-being of our people. 220 people join Clan Hororata every year to bring the games to life. These people are connected to the area, they are passionate about our community and its future.”

From games, we managed to think big. It was the basis for Hororata Tartan, Whiskey, Pie and Night Glow. The games were and still are a platform for community groups to take advantage of, raise funds and meet.

Between the games and Night Glow in 2019, community groups alone raised a collective sum of $ 30,000.00 for their own causes. The two festivals attracted 25,000 people to the area in 2019. There is no doubt that Hororata is on the map because of these events and this has had an influx effect on all segments of society and businesses in the wider region. A University of Canterbury economic study conducted in 2019 found that the games provide an annual economic benefit of $ 370,000 for the Selwyn area.

In the past nine years, the fund has invested $ 150,000 in the community through various projects and donations. All this was possible due to the presence of many people and companies connected to the trust.

Our community now works together to decide what they want their public facilities to look like for future generations. It’s really exciting and the level of engagement is great. The enthusiastic discussion taking place in the community about this will lead to a strong and supported collective decision making. Regardless of this decision, the secretariat will be there to support community initiatives. “

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the first Greendale Faultline earthquake, the Hororata Community Trust released a special limited edition Hororata Whiskey. In a collector’s edition beaker, the whiskey was specially selected by Sir Alex Bruce of Adelphi Distillery in Scotland and Michael Fraser Mile of Whiskey Gallor, both of whom have been valuable supporters of the Hororata Community Trust for a decade.
