We are now nine weeks away from elections that are not only “the most important in our life”, but also may lead to a political earthquake, unlike any elections our country has witnessed since the civil war.

With Donald Trump strongly hinting that unless his victory is announced, he will refuse to acknowledge the election results, the importance of defeating Trump cannot be overstated by an undisputed wide margin.

Many of you who read this are already participating in one of the many organizations that reach out to voters in one or more of the swing states that will, in all likelihood, determine the outcome of the election.

But for those readers who have, in the past four years, outraged by the ongoing, officially recognized racist scandals, the deaths of more than 180,000 Americans, and the clear and present threat to our democracy – but have yet to play an active role in stopping this madness – the time is running late. Now is the time for all hands on the deck!

For supporters of the Democratic Party whose participation in politics has so far been limited to voting every two years (or four), now is the time to get over the situation, roll up your sleeves, and do your part to help the rescue. Our democratic system of government.

Even a few hours a week of calling, texting, or writing letters to voters in one of the swing states would be a meaningful contribution to the nationwide effort to stem Trump’s apparent attempt to impose a presidential authoritarian regime on our country.

For the Somervillians who supported Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren and who have little enthusiasm for the Biden presidency: If you weren’t already involved in the campaign to topple Trump – now is the time to dig and yes, get your hands dirty a messy world of American politics. Everything you care about is at stake, and political purity is a luxury that no one should indulge in at this extremely dangerous moment in history.

Likewise, if you are a registered independent or even a Republican, now is the time to put aside any ideological differences you may have with Joe Biden or the Democratic Party in order to preserve the core of our democracy – the system of checks and balances enshrined in the United States Constitution.

Due to the impact of the global pandemic, almost all campaign activities are now carried out. However, the scope, variety, and sheer scale of the work being done online is truly amazing.

The primary goals of this activity include not only toppling Trump, but also to restore Democrats’ control of the US Senate, and to assist in the election of Democrats to legislative seats in the 50 states – to enact progressive policies, as well as to stop. The pernicious pattern of engineered Republican manipulation that severely undermines the basic democratic concept of one single vote.

There are many tangible ways Somervillians can help achieve these goals. These include: making phone calls and sending texts and letters to people in swing states in order to: 1) help them register to vote, 2) identify voters and get them out in the November 3 elections, 3) help people cast their ballots by mail if that is their preferred option 4) appointing polling observers and polling observers to counter republican efforts that may be made to steal the elections through nefarious activities at local polling stations, and 5) making a financial contribution to any of the candidates or organizations working to bring about the kinds of changes that American society badly needs.

From what I’ve heard, Somerville may actually have more people serving in these elections per capita than any other city or town in the state. However, we need to escalate things between now and November 3rd.

If the preliminary election results indicate a clear victory for Biden, it will be extremely difficult for Trump to run in the election. However, as I have read, a variety of strategies are in place to overcome any and all attempts that Trump might make to declare himself the winner regardless of the actual election results.

The days and weeks after November 3 could turn into a protracted struggle involving legal challenges and mass mobilization on the streets (among other things) to make sure Trump leaves the White House by noon on January 20.

Somervillians must rise to the occasion in this extremely important struggle for the future and soul of our country. Let’s go to it!
