(CNN) – Cigar maker Camel, Lucky Strike and Pall Mall are trying to provide a new product: coronavirus vaccine.
British American Tobacco said Wednesday that its biotech subsidiary, Kentucky BioProcessing, is working on its potential vaccine for the new coronavirus which can be produced in laboratory-grown plants closely related to tobacco.
A biotech company that helped develop it The 2014 Ebola treatment was joined by a dozen other companies competing to develop the Covid-19 vaccine, which has now infected more than 880,000 people worldwide and claimed more than 44,000 lives.
The development of the vaccine usually takes years, but scientists and government officials are hoping for an accelerated process to prevent the virus from being revived. Many experts say the vaccine takes at least 18 months, but others warn that even that schedule is optimistic.
British American Tobacco said its potential vaccine is currently being tested on animals and that it is “researching partnerships with government agencies” to bring the vaccine to clinical trials.
“Vaccine development is a challenging and complex business, but we believe we have made a significant leap forward with our technology platform for tobacco production,” said David O’Reilly, director of scientific research at British American Tobacco.
If clinical trials continue, the company said it hopes to produce up to 3 million doses of vaccine a week in early June. Those doses will be lost if the tests fail, but it’s “a price worth paying” to save time, O’Reilly said.
For the purpose of creating a potential vaccine, Kentucky BioProcessing cloned part of the novel coronavirus genetic sequence and injected it into plants that have developed a potential antigen – a substance that induces an immune response in the body and is needed to fight the virus. This is now being tested on rodents.
According to the World Health Organization, plant origins can be produced cheaply in very large quantities and vaccines are less likely to contain harmful ingredients than traditionally developed vaccines.
Efforts by cigarette manufacturers to address urgently public health issues could still raise eyebrows. “I hope tobacco policy will not interfere here and that people will objectively determine whether or not our technology can be useful,” O’Reilly told CNN Business.
Kentucky BioProcessing was involved in the production of ZMapp in 2014, the treatment it was tested for some success on Ebola patients in the United States before giving up in favor of more effective alternatives.
