Two goals in the second half of Whitecaps strength to win earthquakes

Portland, Oregon – Ali Adnan and Toussaint Ricketts scored in Vancouver Whitecaps’ 2-1 victory over San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon.

Whitecaps had hoped to remain in the playoff position in the Western Ranking with a win. And they entered the match in a three-way match for eighth and last place with Real Salt Lake and Houston. Vancouver’s win now puts them on par with San Jose on points as they are both tied for seventh, but the “caps have two more wins” than earthquakes.

The Whites found themselves 1-0 down after a goal by Carlos Fierro in the 24th minute. Christian Espinosa sped up the wing and fired the ball into the penalty area. Fierro then hit the ball in the net and overtook Ivan Bush to open the scoring.

Vancouver entered the first half with one goal, but they responded with two goals in the second half.

Adnan equalized the equalizer in the 51st minute of the match with a free spinning kick from 32 yards, defeating goalkeeper James Marcinowski.

Vancouver will take the lead in the end thanks to Toussaint Rickets later in the game. Christian Dagomey fired a shot into the net that Marcinovsky saved at first. But the ball is deflected towards Ricketts’ foot. He then slapped her into the net to give the “hats” a 2-1 lead.

The Whitecaps will return to action Tuesday night against the Seattle Sounders in Portland.
