U.S. police speak injured Indian – BBC News

U.S. prosecutors have said they plan to try a police officer for the third time for using excessive force against an Indian grandfather who was pushed to the ground while taking a walk in the morning. Eric Parker has twice been tried in a federal court for excessive use of force – in both cases the jury did not make a unanimous decision. What happened in February this year left Sureshbhai Patel partially paralyzed. Patel’s family said in an exclusive interview with the BBC that they expect the officer involved, Eric Parker, to go to jail for what happened. Mr. Parker is still awaiting trial on a charge of third-degree assault. The family has also complained of compensation. Police say he did not want to hurt Mr. Patel, but acted for the safety of the officer. The case had international headlines – the Indian government raised concerns and apologized to the governor of Alabama. North American correspondent Rajini Vaidyanathan has this special report.
