On October 30, 2020, the eastern Greek island of Samos was hit by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which triggered a tsunami that caused severe damage and destruction, including the killing of teenagers under the rubble.

We are a group of Greek Canadian and American women of Greek descent from Samos Island. We are: Dora Caltakis-Papotsakis, Doris Donlow-Richmond, Stella Barchavas-Cassidoles and Elene Kaltaki.

After hearing this devastating earthquake, we wanted to help even though the distance is far away and during a global pandemic! Samos Island is our home and “our happy place” and has endured a lot in the past decade between the economic crisis, the refugee crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Now this!

The tsunami struck Samos.

I, (Dora) have my summer home next to the mayor of Samos, Mr. Georgios Stantzos and my cousin, Ilene Kaltaki, are working with city councilors to collect the information requested from residents on what they need.

What is needed immediately is: tents, blankets, sleeping bags and other necessities that will help the displaced population sleep at night as more than 500 homes are currently considered dangerous and they must evacuate their homes.

Many families sleep in their cars and the nights are very cold.
