Izmir garrison recovers after earthquake in Turkey

A spokesman said Thursday that the garrison of NATO’s ground headquarters in Izmir, Turkey, has resumed normal operations since the earthquake struck on October 30.

In an email, Army Lt. Col. Travis Detmire said that damage assessments for all buildings at LANDCOM headquarters have been completed. He said that there were cracks in the walls and stucco ceilings of the buildings, but nothing unexpected and the facility was operating normally, without any delay.

The Turkish Bases Support Group, responsible for al-Qaeda operations there, has also made its own assessment of the damage, but Ditmer said results are not yet available. But he said there were no indications of major problems and the operations were proceeding normally.

About 100 US military personnel are stationed in Izmir, which was hit by a major earthquake on the morning of October 30. At least 14 people were killed and hundreds injured in Turkey and Greece as a result of the devastating earthquake.

Approximately 70 soldiers, most of them soldiers along with a few pilots and Marines, are in the garrison of Landcom headquarters. This garrison is about five miles from the hardest hit area.

Another 30 pilots are stationed in a building in downtown Izmir that houses Air Force Base No. 425 Squadron. Detmir said damage assessments to 425 installations in downtown Izmir were completed over the weekend. Facilities like Barber, Mandoob, PX and other vendors reopened on Sunday, and the remaining normal operations were fully resumed on Monday.

He said that no physical injuries were reported from the earthquake. He said LANDCOM provides extended counseling services to anyone seeking help working through any psychological trauma they may have gone through.
