The WHA resolution calls for an integrated action on epilepsy and other neurological disorders
At the 73rd session of the World Health Assembly, Member States adopted a resolution calling for expanded and integrated action on epilepsy and other neurological disorders and called for a global action plan for consideration 75.th World Health Assembly session.
Neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability and another cause of death. The five biggest contributors are stroke, migraine, dementia, meningitis and epilepsy.
Much of the burden of neurological disease can be prevented provided broad public health responses are implemented in maternal and newborn health care, infectious disease control, injury prevention, and cardiovascular health. Challenges and gaps in the provision of care and services to people with neurological disorders exist worldwide, and more so in low- and middle-income countries.
An intersectoral action plan for epilepsy and other neurological disorders will address these gaps by integrating the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of neurological disorders into primary care, which is key to achieving universal health coverage.
