Repairs from the March earthquake are underway at the Great Salt Lake State Park

Salt Lake City, Utah – When a magnitude 2.5 aftershock struck Magna Wednesday afternoon, work crews were working to repair damage from the magnitude 5.7 earthquake in March along the entry road to Great Salt Lake State Park.

Alex Caprero of KSL was there and said he didn’t feel anything when the aftershock struck, but added that it could be due to the heavy machinery repairing the road.

A magnitude 2.5 earthquake has been reported north of Magna.

There are some days when Mother Nature has a lot to say at Great Salt Lake State Park. On Wednesday, it was all about the wind.

“You see a lot of dust.” Park Director Dave Shearer said, “We are having some storms from 40-50 miles an hour.” Earlier we had 70.

This is not uncommon in the Great Salt Lake State Park. However, the other sound that was heard on Wednesday was from construction vehicles.

They were in the park due to a noise eight months ago that Shearer will never forget.

“This is the first earthquake that I actually heard where it was really loud,” said Shearer.

He was in the camper’s house in the park that early morning in March when Mother Nature decided to talk about the earthquake.

He said, “We started going up and down with great difficulty.” “Then in the final part of it, we felt the ground falling and moving north.”

Shearer said he felt the ground shaking before, but nothing like it.

“It was really scary,” he said. “I’ve been through a lot of earthquakes here in Utah, and it’s always sideways movement like this. Nothing like that before.”

It turned out that the epicenter of the magnitude 5.7 earthquake was roughly below the park.

He left some cracks in the ground, knocked on objects in the visitor center and baffled a man sleeping in his boat at the dock.

“He said he was being squeezed too hard by the waves that were inside the anchorage because of the earthquake,” Shearer said.

Most of the damage was on the entrance way.

“The road was in very good condition until the earthquake,” Shearer said. “Two months ago, we started noticing a lot of failure. We were told that it was getting colder and that we were getting more moisture that was causing failure.”

So from this week through next week, construction crews will be building a new road. People can still visit the park but may have to wait a minute or two to arrive.

“Even though the road is kind of torn up, they direct the traffic and you can still get in here,” said Shearer.

The Great Salt Lake State Park is an interesting place to visit. It is the place where you can think of time and enjoy so much natural beauty.
