Haridwar: An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was reported near Haridwar in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

At 9:41 a.m., the tremors were recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers, about 22 kilometers west-northwest of Haridwar, according to the National Center of Seismology (NCS).

“Earthquake magnitude: 3.9, occurred on 01-12-2020, 09:41:50 IST, latitude: 30.03, longitude: 77.95, depth: 10 km, location: 22 km northwest (WNW) of Haridwar, Uttarakhand,” He tweeted on NCS.

No injuries were reported so far.

NCS is the Indian government’s nodal agency for monitoring earthquake activity in the country.

According to the Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority, the entire Himalayan terrain is located in Zone V and Zone IV of India’s earthquake division map which divides the Indian land area into four distinct risk zones, i.e. from Zone II to Zone V.

As it traverses major tectonic disruptions in the Himalayas, Uttarakhand often experiences less powerful earthquakes.

“Having been identified as a potential area for a catastrophic future earthquake is a concern for everyone, especially those who live in this area,” according to the Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority.
