In memory of Dr. John Goodson: “A truly compassionate doctor and friend”

For more than 50 years, Dr. John B. Goodson has volunteered at a hospital in Haiti, having taken part in more than 80 medical surgical missions there.

Goodson, 81, died on November 29 at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg.

Judson was a graduate of Villanova University and Georgetown University School of Medicine, established his surgical residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, and then worked in cardiothoracic surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah.

His family said his “passion for medicine as a general practitioner and cardiac surgeon includes work in Blacksburg, Virginia; Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas; Benton Harbor, Michigan; and Harrisburg.”

He volunteered at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti where he held the position of Medical Director from 1997 to 1999.

He was a pilot and was ferrying patients via Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic.

Goodson served as president of the Harrisburg Rotary Club.

As someone who pursued life with integrity and passion, he was always there with a listening ear and willing to help others. His family said he cherished his relationships and kept in touch with friends and family soon and far.

Goodson and his wife, Anne Marie, were honored with the 2011 Humanitarian Award from the Tocqueville Society of the United Capital Region.

The award recognized their commitment to providing medical care to people in Haiti and elsewhere, including Nicaragua, Ethiopia and the Dominican Republic.

Goodson was a former chair of the Lemoine Borough Council and medical director of Hamilton Health Center.

Five children, Ruth Judson from Arlington, Virginia, Andrea Goodson from Baltimore, Maryland, Sarah Salkild (Brett) from Severna Park, Maryland, Therese Carl (John) from Ray, New York, and Chris Goodson from Winnipeg, Canada; Six grandchildren, Chloe, John Vincent, Leah, Sophia, Owen, and Nate; His siblings Joyce Harzel is from Vancouver, Washington, Mary Hutton from Kensau, Georgia, Michael Goodson from Palm Island, SC, Margaret Easton from Sandpoint, Idaho, and Patricia Rehm from Athens, GA.
