Remember a summer full of protests in Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah – In a year that has seen the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the presidential election, and even a serious earthquake, one of the biggest events here in Utah is what happened on a Saturday afternoon in May. A protest in downtown Salt Lake City turned violent, leaving us with images that not many thought we’d see here.

Protests have always been happening in Utah, and the morning of May 30 was not much different.

The demonstrators shouted, “This is what democracy looks like.”

People express their views on the national issue of police cruelty.

A woman at the protest said, “I’m really happy it wasn’t violent because our kids are here and we wanted to show that we can protest peacefully.”

But this peaceful protest turned into riots shortly after 3 pm when a few people flipped a Salt Lake City police car to the side and roof.

Cheers may have erupted when the car caught fire.

“It’s clear the situation here is, I mean, totally out of control at this point,” said Alex Caprero of KSL TV as the glass around him shattered during a Facebook live broadcast.

Salt Lake City police, as well as law enforcement agencies across the Wasatch front, came to the city center to disperse the riots.

It took several hours, people and officers were injured in the clashes, but by 10 pm, the riots were over.

Much of the damage, including graffiti and vandalism, has been left in the Utah Capitol Building, which is a symbol of our society.

“Black lives matter, no justice, no peace, but graffiti? Destroying our Capitol? We didn’t win this. A man who volunteered to clean up the next morning said,” We didn’t prove anything.

That day was just the beginning of a summer of protests – most of them remained peaceful, but a handful of them turned violent like the one in Provo where the SUV driver continued walking while protesters were on the way.

“He ran them over and then caught me,” said a protester. “I ended up falling to the side after he hit me.”

A man on the street pulled out his pistol and got into the SUV and shot the driver. This driver ended up going to the hospital. He lived while the shooter was arrested.

There was also a protest in Cottonwood Heights as participants walked the roads.

The police asked them to turn away from the streets, and when the people did not listen, the protesters and officers began to clash.

“It’s unbelievable,” a woman shouted.

Cottonwood Heights officers have made several arrests, saying that obstructing traffic and on the roads is not something they allow.

An officer said, “This is not Salt Lake City, it is Cottonwood Heights.” We will not allow them to take over residential streets and not allow people to go to their homes. ”

Then, in July, another protest in Salt Lake City turned into riots, with people smashing the windows of the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office and painting the building and street red after DA Sim Gill cleared the officers of the shooting and killed a man months earlier.

The police did not move until two men started smashing those windows, leading to another confrontation between the officers and the protesters.

“We cannot allow this to happen, so we have ordered our officers, our mobile forces and our work teams to come to disperse the crowd,” said Mike Brown, chief of police in Salt Lake City.

It has been a summer that will always be remembered in Salt Lake City – a summer filled with rage, passion, actions and scars that still takes some time to heal.
