Geologist explains the possible cause of the Wichita earthquake

Wichita, Kansas (KWCH) – Residents felt the last earthquake recorded in East Wichita early Monday morning with a magnitude of 2.2. Given the possible causes of the numerous earthquakes reported in the area since Thanksgiving, a local geologist explains why he believed there was a newly identified fault line.

The earthquake that was recorded overnight was not felt as much as last Wednesday’s larger earthquake recorded by the Kansas Geological Survey with a magnitude of 3.9, but it has continued the seismic activity that has ramped up locally since late November. Dr. Sal Mazolo, a retired professor of geology at Wichita State University, said it is almost impossible to predict whether local earthquakes will increase in frequency or magnitude over time.

“I hope they stop. I don’t know if they will or not,” said Dr. Mazolo. “But I would rather not live in a region that is tectonically active.”

Dr Mazolo believes there are new bugs that had not previously been recognized under Wichita’s management. He showed a map with two other potential defects unconnected by the Humboldt fault line.

“The faults slide to cause earthquakes, and all of them are in this region from the middle to the thirteenth, and most of them are located in this region,” he said, referring to an area in eastern Wichita where recent earthquakes were recorded. “This is where we think there is a bug that may not have been previously identifiable. It might be present. It could also be due to a known bug that is located to the west of us, which extends across the other side of Wichita.”

The largest earthquake was recorded on December 30 with a magnitude of 3.8 by the United States Geological Survey and 3.9 by the Kansas Geological Survey. Dr Mazolo explained that the Kansas Geological Survey has more seismographs in the state.

“The USGS only has one in Kansas, so we are counting, relying on the information provided by the Kansas Survey because they have better data coverage.”

When it comes to earthquake strength, Mazolo added, potential structural damage begins when the earthquake strength exceeds 4.0 magnitude.

The Kansas Foundation panel reached its findings on recent earthquakes and said they are not related to the oil and gas industry. The KCC issued the following statement.

“The Kansas Foundation Committee understands and shares existing concerns about recent seismic events in Wichita. We want residents to know that our staff continue to monitor seismic activity in the area and work with (the Kansas Geological Survey and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment). Any new information we learn will be shared.”
