Authorities say the mysterious shaking in San Diego was not an earthquake

Residents of San Diego and East County reported that they felt and heard a mysterious tremor on Tuesday evening, but authorities monitoring the seismic activity said it was not an earthquake.

In response to a question about a possible earthquake in the region, the main US Geological Survey account on Twitter said that the tremor was not an earthquake “but it was probably a loud sound which is very common” in San Diego.

Soon people across San Diego took to Twitter for information about the accident, which happened just before 5:10 p.m., and some admitted early on that it might have been a sonic explosion, or something else.

“Some kind of strange shaking happened in San Diego a few minutes ago,” one person tweeted. “It didn’t feel like an earthquake. More like a strange windstorm. I’m not sure what it was like, but I’m not in favor of more bad things.”

Another tweeted: “So, either we’ve had an earthquake or my house is preparing to fall into a sinkhole. I’d rather an earthquake.”

Union-Tribune reporters, who work from home during the coronavirus pandemic, report that they have felt tremors in Normal Heights, San Carlos and La Mesa.

A Twitter user reported feeling “an earthquake or sound loud” near Valencia Park, in southeast San Diego. Another Twitter user reported a “big boom and jolt,” but without shake, in Rancho San Diego.

The Geological Survey reported a small earthquake Tuesday night in the desert southeast of Ocotillo in Imperial County, but the magnitude 1.6 earthquake was too small to be felt in San Diego, and it happened just before 7 pm, roughly two hours after the mystery jolt .

The Geological Survey tweeted that those who felt the mysterious tremor could report it as “an unknown event” on the agency’s “Did you feel it” page.
