The Samosir region experienced 60 earthquakes from January to 19 April: BMKG

Medan (Antara) – The Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) recorded Zone 1 in Medan 60 earthquakes in Samosir District, North Sumatra Province, from January to 19 April 2021.

Marzuki Cinnambella, a researcher at Regional Seismology Center 1 of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), explained here Monday that the earthquakes were of two types, a medium-depth type caused by subduction and shallow-depth earthquakes associated with local faults caused by fluid leakage into the seismic zone For local fault activity.

The highest degree of earthquakes to strike from January to April 19, 2021, was recorded at 3.9. Meanwhile, the average depth of an earthquake with a magnitude of M less than 2.4 was found to be less than 5 km.

According to BMKG, further study should be done on earthquakes in Samosir as the largest of them have occurred in the Balibi, Ningolan and Onan Rongo regions.

In addition, the agency deemed it necessary to conduct a follow-up to uncover details of tectonic conditions at Samosir.

BBMKG Region I appealed to the public to avoid succumbing to undue panic due to the earthquake and contact BMKG Square for the correct information.

Meanwhile, Reza, the analysis team at the Regional Seismic Center (PGR) 1, indicated 12 earthquake events in Samosir on April 18, 2021, with a magnitude of 1.6-3.9.

PGR1 records indicated a link between the earthquake that struck Samosir and those that struck in previous months based on the distribution of the epicenter.
