The WVC family remains homeless due to earthquake damage

West Valley City, Utah – A family remains displaced from their home in West Valley City due to earthquake damage more than a month ago.

Jose Garcia and his family owned their mobile home for five years.

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake centered on Magna transformed the house three feet from its foundation.

“The day the earthquake happened, the trailer fell off and my wife and child were in the trailer,” Garcia said through an interpreter.

Garcia described how his family fled the house through a window because the damage surrounded the door. The earthquake also destroyed pipes and wires in the house.

He said: “When the trailer fell on its side three feet, the water and gas pipes were damaged.”

The house is still without facilities.

West Valley City officials said crews from the city, the county, and a local church helped the family settle in. Ultimately, the cost and responsibility of repairing the home infrastructure lies with the homeowner.

“I understand that I have to be the right person to fix that,” Garcia said.

The cost of returning a home to code to make it livable is in thousands of dollars. It is a huge burden on Garcia and his family who have lived a life for themselves in West Valley City for five years.

“It is very expensive and it will take our help to be able to do that,” Garcia said.

Garcia now lives with other family members, as they hope and wait for a day when they can secure the resources that allow them to return to their homes.

“We miss our home very much. My family and I want to go home. Garcia said: There is no place like being in the house.
