We live in critical times Opinion

A new word crept into my language while I didn’t see it – “Liminal”. Not included in any of my dictionaries. It was published only 20 years ago.

Not “Yemen”, which means drawing or painting.

“Criminal” is derived from the Latin word “limen”, which means the entrance threshold. It indicates the division between inside and outside, between warm and cold, between calm and storm.

It is the moment of transition, when one state turns into another.

It is easy to determine the defining moment if it is the entrance. It’s more difficult with geography, for example. Exactly where do you say the mountains end and the prairies begin? What do the hills belong to?

Or by light. At what stage, when does the light fade, the day becomes night?

In fact, it may not be possible to determine the exact transition points. Is this shirt dry or wet? Is spring day warm compared to winter? Or cool compared to summer?

If you think this is difficult, try applying verbs to social habits. When did tattoo become prevalent? When did some four-letter words become acceptable in a joint speech?

On such matters, you often often know that you went too far, and when you went too far.

Once upon a time, I worked with a British cartoonist. A talented artist. Puckish sense of humor. But he was tempted to stand near me six inches. I felt as though he was snooping on my personal space. This was, apparently, the way people talk to each other in London.

Today, COVID-19 concerns have changed the rules. We are supposed to stay two meters away. If I think without it, the person I am talking to tends to fall back.

I wonder how much our social exclusion will become familiar, and when will the rules be relaxed? (It is truly a “social” exclusion, despite the euphemistic expressions of distinction from the “physical” dimension. We have no problem keeping physical distances between us and troubled dogs, hurting freight trains, and stinking street people. Only when we seek social relations, exclusion becomes Difficult.)

This is not the first time that major changes have occurred in social behavior. Some stick; some do not. Power cuts in Britain during the raid were more strictly obeyed than “staying home” orders today.

But the blackout did not last. Today, many office buildings remain lit all night.

On the contrary, the United States largely funded its war efforts during World War II. This has not diminished at all, although America is not in an official state of war with anyone now.

The Franciscan priest and spiritual teacher Richard Rohr argues that we currently live in a limited time, a transitional time. COVID-19 led us to cut travel, reduce fossil fuel use, grow more of our food, and bake our own bread.

“When we find ourselves in a narrow space, does it matter whether we are driven or jumping? In both cases, we are not where or what we were before, and we do not know how or where we will fall in our new reality,” Rohr writes.

In general, Rohr continues, “We hope this time will end. But what if we could choose to try this limited space

And time, this is now inconvenient … as a place and state of creativity, construction and disassociation, choice and transformation? “

There have been times like this in the past. Abolition of slavery could be the most distant in Canada in 1819; in Britain, 1834; the United States, 1863. The Tides Islands turned against an acceptable practice without question since the date began to be recorded.

Other conditions may be the discovery of vaccines. The movement towards equality for women. Henry Ford car for the masses, Model T.

These were all crucial times, shifts from one generally accepted model to another. Not everyone welcomed the new situation. Some fought, teeth and coffin nail. He expected only a few of the changes that the new model would lead to – for better or worse.

Seismologists talk about fault areas, fracture areas, and underground depth. For decades and centuries, vast masses of Earth’s crust remain closed together. Then, one day, something slips. The blocks are re-aligned as an earthquake.

There is an ongoing earthquake now. Never before had countries around the world worked in solidarity as they had to contain the COVID-19 virus. No one yet knows how the rift areas of culture and belief will rearrange themselves.

Criminal times may look like chaos and disorder, and inexplicable clips on the chart. Indeed, they are in labor pangs of something new being born.
