Hungary Index journalists walk out to get fired

More than 70 journalists and staff at Hungary’s top news site have resigned, accusing the government of launching an attempt to destroy or tarnish their website.
The index is the latest from major independent media and editor-in-chief Szabolcs Dull was fired on Tuesday.
Her reporters said dismissal was “clear interference” and an attempt to put pressure on the site.
Hours later protesters gathered in Budapest to protest media freedom.
Over the past decade, supporters of nationalist and conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban have gradually taken control of Hungary’s independent media. Hungary ranks 89th out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index.

The demonstrators were planning to march to the prime minister’s office.
Just last month, Szabolcs Dull had warned that the Index was “under such external pressure that it could express the end of our editorial staff as we know it”. In an alarming piece published on June 22, he warned him the site’s editorial staff was “at risk” and the call to a “freedom barometer” on the homepage shifted to “at risk.”
On Friday, three editors-in-chief and more than 70 others said they were ending their employment there because board chairman Laszlo Bodolai had refused to reinstate the editor-in-chief. There were emotional scenes as they continued to walk out of the office.
Mr Bodolai denied allegations that the site’s independence was in jeopardy, blaming Dull for not controlling the tension within the editorial office.
Pro-Orban businessman in the center of the row
Fear of the Index’s independence came to mind a few months ago when Miklos Vaszily, a pro-Orban businessman, took a 50% stake in the firm that controls the Index’s advertising and revenue.
He already ran the pro-government broadcaster TV2 and was seen playing a key role in turning another Hungarian website, Origo, into a pro-Orban outlet.
As the drama unfolded in the Index editorial office on Friday, a photo of Mr. Vaszily having lunch with Orban chief counsel and historian Maria Schmidt.
Hungary’s ongoing effort with the EU
The government led by Mr. Fidesz Orban has repeatedly clashed with the European Union over the rule of law, and the party was suspended by the European Parliament’s center-right PPP group over its immigration policies.
Last month, the EU high court ruled that Hungary was violating European law by restricting foreign funding to civil society organizations.
Earlier this week, Mr Orban said Hungary and Poland had won a “big win” against EU countries by trying to link rule of law guarantees to a new budget and package of recovery loans and grants. Covida-19.
