Guatemala: Amnesty International requests public hearing for Claudia Gonzlez
Ahead of a hearing in the criminal trial of defender and human rights lawyer Claudia Gonzlez on Thursday, April 11, Ana Piquer, Amnesty International's Americas Director, said:
The Guatemalan authorities should guarantee Claudia Gonzalez the right to a public hearing attended by the press and international observers. In March, the Tenth Trial Court for Criminal Cases, Drug Trafficking and Crimes Against the Environment in Guatemala City ordered Claudia Gonzlez to stand trial for the crime of abuse of authority. On April 11, the same court will decide what evidence to admit for use in that trial. The charge, made in the context of harassment of those fighting impunity and corruption, is related to her work at the International Commission Against Impunity (CICIG).
Amnesty International has noted that Guatemalan authorities have unlawfully restricted public access to hearings in wrongful criminal proceedings against justice workers and human rights defenders such as Claudia Gonzlez and Virginia Laparra, among other violations of their human rights. These restrictions do not have the strict justifications required in accordance with the right to a fair trial.
Amnesty International emphasizes that the public nature of hearings can only be limited in special circumstances and any such restrictions must strictly adhere to international law and be duly justified.
Amnesty International reiterates its call on the Guatemalan authorities to guarantee the right to a fair trial with all due process guarantees for Claudia Gonzlez, and to stop criminalizing prosecutors, judges, former CICIG members, defenders and human rights and journalists.
