Sask. Highway conditions worsen as the spring snowstorm subsides
Highway conditions change minute by minute on Friday.
An Alaskan snowstorm that includes Saskatchewan is expected to begin tapering off Friday as it moves into Manitoba, but areas in central and southern Saskatchewan have been dumped with snow in recent days and highway conditions are poor as a result.
Early Friday morning Saskatchewan Highway Hotline said winter conditions existed and did not recommend travel on certain highways.
A patch on Highway 11 between Dundurn and Davidson was closed for a short time, according to the hotline, but later reopened.
Melanie Laine lives in Hanley, which is within the section of the motorway temporarily closed. She said she has a good view of the highway from her front window.
Traffic was moving more slowly Friday morning, according to Laine, but trucks were still parked in truck stops, left over from the day before when road conditions were also bad.
“I think it probably depends on who the driver is and how comfortable they are, but obviously when they get closer to our sweet little Blackstrap Valley, it can be a different situation,” she said.
RCMP members are helping keep traffic moving slowly, RCMP Sergeant Donna Zawislak said in an emailed statement.
“Please advise motorists to continue to exercise caution as traffic is backed up and road conditions can change at any time.”
Laine said she won't go to work because of the roads, but yesterday when she made the trip, traffic was backed up for hours.
She said her advice to drivers traveling on Friday is to check social media sites before they leave or miss out.
“I'm sure in these situations your company, your boss is probably quite understanding.”
