Nigerian anti-police protesters attack jail, free prisoners
Protesters also attacked police stations and police trucks in other parts of the country.
For more than two weeks Nigeria has been rocked by demonstrations by many young people protesting allegations of police brutality. The demonstrations began in response to a video circulating on the internet showing a man being beaten, apparently by members of the Special Anti-Theft Police Team, known as SARS.
In response to widespread demonstrations, the Nigerian government announced it would disband the SARS unit, but daily protests have continued with participants demanding an end to all police brutality and corruption.
Initially, the protests were peaceful, but then at least 10 people were killed, according to Amnesty International, which accused police of using unnecessary violence against protesters. Protesters have become more militant, throwing stones and other objects at police and other targets, as seen in Monday’s attacks.
Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed has warned that the government will not fold its arms and allow the country to descend into anarchy. We are no longer dealing with #EndSARS but an unstable situation that could lead to anarchy if the government does not take some very determined steps to protect the lives and livelihoods of innocent Nigerians, he told state television, NTA.
Reacting to Monday’s jail break, the Edo State government imposed a 24-hour curfew in a bid to stop the protests.
This decision has become necessary due to the very disturbing incidents of vandalism and attacks on individuals and private institutions by the masquerade with the mask of #EndSARS protesters, said Osarodion Ogie, the secretary of the Edo state government, in a statement.
#EndSARS protests continued Monday in other Nigerian cities, with Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, and Abuja, the capital, particularly hit as protesters closed several streets in cities.
