The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) is calling on residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and take steps to prevent the West Nile virus in their communities.

Ministry of Health Promotes Preventive Measures Against West Nile Virus | Health and Exercise
The first case of West Nile virus of the season was recently reported in northeastern Nebraska, according to health officials. The virus infects people by being bitten by infected mosquitoes.
LLCHD officials report that mosquito pools are being tested positive for West Nile virus in Nebraska. The Ministry of Health is urging the public to reduce mosquito breeding grounds by taking the following steps:
• Throw away the small water pool every day to maintain the pool properly.
• Remove debris, weeds and debris from drains.
• Change the water in the bird bath and pet bowl daily every week.
• Store tires, buckets and containers in a place where water does not collect.
• Fill low yard areas.
• Maintain garden ponds and fountains to maintain water flow at all times.
LLCHD also encourages residents to avoid mosquito bites by following the precautions below.
• Limit outdoor time at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. It is usually 30 minutes before sunrise to about 1 hour after sunrise and 30 minutes to about 2 hours after sunset.
