Viral symptoms worsen as the pandemic deepens
Paris (AFP) -Every week, from nasty to deadly, from “COVID toes” to toxic shock, there seems to be a long list of coronavirus symptoms.
What started as a common flu-like cluster of chills, headaches, and fever has grown rapidly over the past three months into a catalog of syndromes that affect most of the body’s major organs.
The new coronavirus also pushes the immune system into overdrive, launching indiscriminate attacks on the pathogen and its human host.
“Most viruses can cause illness in two ways,” explained Jeremy Rothman, a senior lecturer in virology at the University of Kent.
“The virus can damage the tissues that it replicates, or it can cause damage as a side effect of the immune system fighting the disease.”
Doctors, for example, suspect COVID-19 is behind the recent weeks of hospitalization of more than 100 children and adolescents in New York, London and Paris. Vomiting and organ failure in extreme cases.
The deaths of three people in New York have been attributed to the so-called childhood multisystem inflammatory syndrome, with the other two believed to be likely.
In adults, COVID-19 has been associated with dozens of medical studies with other life-threatening conditions such as stroke, heart damage and brain swelling.
A urology researcher at Nanjing University of Medicine wrote last week in Nature Reviews and said the patient had severe urinary tract complications and acute kidney injury.
They also observed “dramatic changes” in androgens.
“After recovery from COVID-19, young men who are interested in having children should be consulted about fertility,” they advised.
Cascade symptoms
Does this mean that COVID-19 causes a wide range of unique symptoms? Not necessarily, says virologists and other experts.
“If it’s a common disorder, even rare complications will often occur,” Babak Javid, a consultant for infectious diseases at Cambridge University Hospital, told AFP.
There are more than 4.1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide, but the true number of infections is “thousands, perhaps hundreds of millions” given the undetected subclinical infections. He said.
“That means even if there are complications in 1 in 1,000, or even in 10,000, it’s still in the thousands.”
He said that some of the rare symptoms associated with the new coronavirus also manifested in influenza, killing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide each year. But there are decisive differences. “Compared to the flu, you are more ill and more likely to die.”
The death toll confirmed at COVID-19 is approaching 300,000, which is rapidly approaching.
Front-line general practitioners first saw the pattern as the pandemic spread from zero in central China to weeks around the world.
“At first, I was told to be careful of headaches, fever, and mild coughs,” recalls Sirvie Montnoye, a family doctor in central Paris.
“I then added a runny nose and a throat scratch. After that, I have gastrointestinal problems such as stomach pain and severe diarrhea.”
The list continued to grow: skin lesions, neurological problems, sharp chest pain, loss of taste and smell.
Confusion
“We started thinking that we should doubt everything,” Monnoe said, wearing protective clothing from head to toe.
Some patients were very scary, she added, frightened at the corner of her office, fearing that they would touch something or get too close to her.
A breakdown of the symptoms of 2,591 COVID-10 patients admitted to the hospital from March 1st to May 1st was reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, and such cases have been reported.
Three-quarters of the patients experienced chills, fever, and cough, many of whom were short of breath.
These are the most common COVID-19 symptoms.
According to internal reports, nearly one-third complained of flu-like muscle pain and 28% had diarrhea and one-quarter of nausea or vomiting.
About 18% had headaches and 10-15% suffered chest or abdominal pain, runny nose, sore throat, and / or a sense of confusion.
Less than 1% of the CDC cohort showed other symptoms such as seizures, rashes, and conjunctivitis.
Health officials have been slow to alert the public to this comprehensive information about possible consequences.
Odor loss
Until the end of April, the CDC itself posted only three on its website: cough, fever, and shortness of breath. The update contained only a few chills, muscle aches, headaches, loss of smell and taste.
Loss of olfaction and taste were found in only 3.5% of patients included in the CDC report, but experts found these symptoms-for unknown reasons-more common in non-hospitalized less severe cases I doubt.
“There are no patients with these symptoms who have serious complications,” Monnoe said.
Loss of taste and smell are very rare with other types of viruses.
Another cluster of symptoms, rarely seen in influenza patients, appears to arise from blood clots.
Recent studies have shown that heart problems, liver thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and brain damage in COVID-19 patients are attributed to such thrombi.
“When you get very sick with COVID, you can have problems with blood clot formation, which seems much more common than other viral infections,” Javid added.
The third cluster of abnormal symptoms involves a skin rash.
“The” rashes “associated with COVID seem to be as many as difficult to spot,” said dermatologist Graeme Lipper in a medical information website, Medscape.
The condition known as a pseudo-bruise or “COVID toe” has been the focus of most attention, with social media photos showing numbers discolored like frostbite.
Like loss of odor, this condition can cause painful itching and burning sensations and is associated with the benign form of the virus.
