Teenage caregiver spends his money to make PPE
A 13-year-old young caregiver made hundreds of face shields with a 3D printer that he bought with his holiday money.
Helping his father, Scarborough’s teenage William Steinton created 670 face shields and 900 ear savers to protect the ears of people wearing masks.
He made them for nursing homes and local chemists in Scarborough and Bridlington.
William came up with the idea himself after suggesting that his father, 57-year-old Kevin, 57, do something to stay occupied during the lockdown.
His father has coronary heart disease and stage 4 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been shielded since March.
At the beginning of the lockdown, William investigated how other countries were dealing with the crisis.
The father says: “He went up to his room, began investigating his computer, and got off an hour later.
“He was reading about an Italian company that manufactures valves for ventilators, but he thought the same would help in the UK and asked if there was a 3D printer available.
“We had some holiday money set aside, so William suggested using it to get it.
“I did some research and found it.”
The UK didn’t lack ventilator components, but after hearing the lack of PPE, he decided to make a face shield.
Steinton said: “He was one of the first to start making them in our area.
“I am very proud of him and everything he does.
“He thinks I’m worried about getting Covid-19, so I think if I can help protect others from viruses, I can help.
“He helps me every day with everything I need.
“Cooking, washing, he helps me walk around.
“He brightens my day and is always trying to cheer me up.”
Janet Sanderson, a senior child service officer at the North Yorkshire Council, said: “It’s great to see how our youth use innovative tools to tackle community challenges.
“This young man has generously invested his money in something to help the wider community.
“It is clear that he is a trust in the community, coupled with his role as a young caregiver.”
