Malta sets a COVID record as the United States warns against a trip to the island

Valletta, December 29 (Reuters)-Malta registered a record number of COVID-19 infections on Wednesday. This is because the United States has added Mediterranean islands to the highest risk categories of travel and urged its citizens not to visit.
Health officials said 1,337 new COVID-19 infections were detected, a record high for the second consecutive day. It is the fifth time in eight days that new daily infections have set national records.
However, hospitalization remained low in only 82 viral patients.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised to ban travel to Malta late Tuesday and put Malta in the Level 4 “very high” category. Over 500 cases have been registered per 100,000 residents in the last 28 days.
“Due to the current situation in Malta, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of obtaining and disseminating the COVID-19 mutant,” said the advisory.
Despite high vaccination rates, there was an increase in infectious diseases, with 95% of Malta’s population receiving two vaccinations. The island is currently vaccinated for children over the age of five.
Health Minister Chris Fern also said on Tuesday that 200,000 of the population of about 500,000 have already taken the booster effect.
The business lobby group on Wednesday urged the government to shorten the two-week quarantine period for patients and those who come into contact with them, saying it is affecting the economy.
The Times of Malta reported that at least 20,000 people are currently quarantined. This is four times the population of the capital Valletta.
