People with neuropathy or mental illness are at increased risk of developing a second condition
According to new research, people living in neurological or psychiatric conditions are more likely to have a second such condition in the future, and gender affects risk. ..
This study was the largest in Ontario, both in terms of population size and duration, and was also the first study to investigate the effect of being male or female on the relationship between conditions. Researchers at the University of Waterloo and the Institute for Clinical Evaluation Science conducted their research with funding from the Neurodegenerative Disease Research Initiative (ONDRI).
Worldwide, neuropathy and psychiatric disorders are the leading causes of disability and death. Understanding which disorders or conditions are risk factors or early symptoms of later disorders helps healthcare providers and families provide active care to individuals living in these conditions. “
Colleen Maxwell, Professor of Pharmacy University in Waterloo and Lead Author of Research
Maxwell and collaborators used the state health database to analyze data from more than 5 million Ontario residents aged 40-85. Over a 14-year period, they investigated the association between a particularly common pair of neurological conditions (dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, etc.) and psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety.
They investigated the association between these conditions in both directions, including investigating how previous stroke experiences relate to future risks of dementia and vice versa. In almost all cases, researchers have found an increased rate of developing the second condition. For example, people with a history of Parkinson’s disease had a four-fold higher incidence of dementia, while those with a history of stroke had more than double the incidence of dementia. They also found that having a previous mental illness was associated with an increased rate of later experiencing dementia. Under some conditions, the risk of developing a second disorder lasted more than 10 years from the first disorder.
The team showed that women and men have different risks of developing later conditions after experiencing previous conditions. For example, comparing men and women who had previously had a stroke, women were more likely to develop dementia later than men.
Researchers hope that their work will help not only the care that individuals in these conditions receive directly, but also the planning of the entire health system.
“We also want to inform health care providers who are designing medical education programs to provide and prepare for these common comorbidities,” Maxwell said. Mr. says.
