Western Australia COVID: Only 48 Hours Suspended Elective Surgery at Private Hospital
The daily number of COVID-19 cases in Western Australia declined for the fourth consecutive day as the state tried to resume some civilian selective surgery.
WA Health on Monday reported a new infection of 5566. This is the lowest in almost a week, well below the 7151 cases enrolled on Thursday.
At that time, Prime Minister Mark Magawan said WA peaked in about 10,000 cases per day, just days after the outbreak of Omicron.
Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson has since shown that the peak of cases is weeks ahead.
WA hospitalizations are tracked according to the health department model, but fewer people are in the intensive care unit than expected.
Currently, 163 people, including four in the ICU, are infected with the virus.
Modeling suggested that there were 11 to 23 people in the intensive care unit at this point of development.
According to figures released by WA Health, a quarter of people hospitalized for the virus in the first two weeks of March were unvaccinated.
Almost half of those hospitalized were under the age of 40.
The government has announced that the suspension of elective surgery at a private hospital, which came into effect on Monday, now lasts only 48 hours.
Health Minister Amber Jade Sanderson said the freeze on non-urgent Category 2 and Category 3 overnight procedures has been reviewed, given the relatively low number of hospitalizations for COVID-19. ..
She said the high immunization rate of WA keeps people away from the hospital.
“We take an agile and planned approach to selective surgery and continue to consider these settings to ensure that some patients in need of surgery can be treated.” She said in a statement.
An eight-week suspension of non-urgent elective surgery in a public hospital will take place until May 9.
The government has not yet announced when to ease “level 2” public health restrictions, including restrictions on capacity at home rallies and public places.
McGowan said he hopes the rules will be lifted by the end of March when they are introduced.
