Researchers have integrated a population-based project that has tracked more than 4,000 participants since birth in Stockholm with SmiNet, Sweden’s national infectious disease registry.
They identified 425 people who tested positive for Sars-CoV-2 between May 2020 and the end of March 2021. The average age of participants was 26, with 54% being female.
The researchers then investigated the association between infection and exposure to air pollutants the day before, on the day of the test, and on subsequent control days of participants’ positive tests. Each participant acted as their own control on these various occasions.
Daily outdoor concentrations of various air pollutants at participants’ home addresses, such as black carbon and nitrogen oxides, were estimated using a dispersion model.
Research published in Jama Network OpenFound that exposure to black carbon and contaminant particles less than 10 micrometers and 2.5 micrometers in diameter was associated with an increased risk of Covid-19-positive testing. There was no association between the risk of infection and exposure to nitrogen oxides.

They said the results could be influenced by the willingness to undergo PCR testing and the fact that many young adults were asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms after infection.
