Indonesia detected 15 cases of severe hepatitis after the death of 3 children | Mighty 790KFGO
Jakarta (Reuters) -Indonesia identified 15 cases of unexplained severe hepatitis after reporting the deaths of three children, state health minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin told a news briefing Monday.
The World Health Organization said last week it received reports of at least 228 possible cases of childhood hepatitis or liver inflammation in 20 countries.
Minister Budi said he had detected 15 cases since Indonesia recently began investigating the disease, adding that authorities had not identified a definitive cause.
He did not say whether all 15 cases were children or the treatment they were receiving. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Some health professionals associate the disease with infections caused by a type of adenovirus, a family of common viruses that can cause flu-like and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Another theory is that the blockade of COVID-19 may have weakened the child’s immunity because it was not exposed to common pathogens while isolated.
Scientists are also investigating whether the adenovirus involved is mutated, or whether it is acting in parallel with another infection, perhaps COVID-19.
Earlier this month, Indonesia reported that three suspected children died in the capital Jakarta in April. According to the Ministry of Health, they were vaccinated against hepatitis.
