Monkeypox: The first possible case reported in Missouri, Indiana
Contact tracing is underway in both states. Initial tests are conducted in the state health department lab, and confirmation tests are pending in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab.
“The risk of monkeypox among the general public remains very low,” said Dr. Chris Box, Indiana Health Commissioner. “Monkeypox is rare and does not spread easily with short accidental contact.”
The Health Department in Houston, Texas confirmed the first case of monkeypox on Saturday.
“Residents develop symptoms after returning from travel and are experiencing mild illness,” the Houston Health Department said in writing. “Residents do not need hospitalization and are isolated at home.”
Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease, and the cousins of the currently eradicated smallpox virus are less serious. It is endemic to parts of West Africa and Central Africa and is usually transmitted from rodents or small mammals. It doesn’t easily spread from one person to another.
However, the monkeypox virus can spread through body fluids, monkeypox pain, or contact with items such as clothing and bedding contaminated with the virus. According to the CDC, it can also spread from person to person through respiratory droplets.
