Increasing number of COVID-19 cases burdening Anchorage contact tracking
Anchorage, Alaska (AP)—The increase in COVID-19 cases is straining Anchorage’s ability to investigate cases, according to health authorities.
Anchorage Daily News reports that cities and states are working to expand their contact tracking capabilities as more people interact and local incidents increase. Tracking contact with people who test positive is an important tool for limiting the spread of coronaviruses.
Anchorage Health Director Natasha Pineda wants to hire a temporary person to help track contacts, and will work with the state’s new contact tracking system to expand capabilities next month. In the meantime, he said he would hire another two or two public health nurses.
She said the incident is emerging with more contact. Early in the pandemic, people may have contacted three to five people, but now they’re reporting dozens of contacts, she said.
“In the past week, we have had many cases associated with places that we may have interacted with over 100 people, none of which we were able to track or contact,” Pineda said.
The number of infections is believed to be much higher, since many have not been tested, and research suggests that people can be infected with the virus without upsetting them.
Pineda says that when people dance and socialize indoors in large groups, they must “maintain distance and wear masks,” “creating a community that is very difficult to manage and manage. It will be difficult.”
The state has implemented a contact research and tracking database called CommCare, which Pineda said could help address Anchorage’s capacity issues.

Dr Bruce Chandler, a medical officer for disease prevention and control in Anchorage’s local government, said that some people want to make a phone call every day and some don’t. Anchorage has now given more discretion as to how often nurses call and when to provide information to the Health Department instead.
