A rare case of amoeba destroying the brain has been confirmed in Florida-KEYT
A rare, brain-damaging amoeba case was identified in Florida.
Friday’s Florida Department of Health Announced confirmed cases Naegleria fowleri — According to the microscopic unicellular amoeba DOH, which can infect and destroy the brain, it is usually fatal.
Only 19 amoeba cases have been reported in Florida since 1962. It was discovered in Hillsboro County, but DOH did not reveal further details.
Naegleria fowleri is usually found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers and ponds. The DOH warned people swimming in these freshwater sources to be aware of the possible presence of amoeba, especially when the water was warm.
“Amebas come in through the nasal passages, so avoiding nasal contact with water can prevent negative health effects on humans,” DOH said.

DOH also noted that rinsing the congested sinuses could expose them to amoeba via the neti pot.
“Use only boiling and cooling, distilled, or sterile water to make a netipot sinus lavage or to perform ritual clarification,” it said.
