Cellular processes associated with postpartum depression
In pregnant women who develop postpartum depression (PPD), a cellular process known as autophagy helps clear debris from cells, according to a new study by researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and UVA Health. may have been damaged.

PPD is a serious mental health condition that endangers the health of parents and babies. One in eight of her women has the disorder, making it the most common postpartum complication. “If we can figure out a biological way to predict which people are at risk for PPD, we can intervene during pregnancy to prevent the disease,” Osborne said.
The researchers decided to evaluate the role of messenger RNA in extracellular vesicles (EV) in PPD. Extracellular vesicles are membrane-bound structures that allow cells to exchange proteins, lipids, and messenger RNAs involved in intercellular communication. Previous studies have shown that EV levels increase during pregnancy.
“We know that extracellular RNA communication is involved in important aspects of pregnancy, such as how the placenta forms and problems like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia,” says Osborne. “It makes sense to study its role in PPD as well.”
Researchers studied plasma samples from seven nondepressed pregnant women who developed PPD and seven control subjects without the disorder. Samples were taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months and her 6 months postpartum.

To validate their findings, Osborne and her colleagues would like to conduct a study of 600 women representing various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
