MIT is working on a project designed to change the future of exercise.
Scientists are studying mice to create pills that may have effects similar to exercise.
“My advice to everyone is if you can live healthier, stay active and eat healthier. MIT professor Dr. Manolis Kelis says:
One of the resources Dr. Kelis and his team are working on is a pill that could provide a similar effect to exercise for people who, for one reason or another, can’t make it to the gym.
“Such an intervention would be a complete game changer because the obesity epidemic has reduced life expectancy in the United States compared to all other developed countries,” says Dr. Kelis.
Obesity increased by 11% in the United States during the pandemic alone, according to the CDC. This new pill isn’t a weight loss drug, but it uses stem cells, muscle and fat to create health.
“It will suddenly have a global impact on the health of the United States and the health of the world,” says Dr. Kelis.
The idea of working out with pills has generated some interesting feedback from students around the MIT campus.
MIT student Akash said:
“I’m skeptical about how this will actually play out. There seems to be no shortcuts to exercise,” says MIT student Cher Jain.
Dr. Kelis emphasizes that if you can exercise, this pill shouldn’t replace it. His team hopes to create another option for those who can’t.
“Basically, we help people live healthier, more fulfilling lives,” says Dr. Kelis.
MIT researchers say it could be five to 10 years before the pill hits stores.
