Dangerous strain of bird flu detected in New Haven County – NBC Connecticut
The State Department of Agriculture said highly pathogenic bird flu was detected in a backyard flock in New Haven County.
The flock consists of turkeys, guinea pigs and chickens, officials said. Animals are pets and not commercial property.
A positive result for bird flu was detected on 4 October. USDA officials said they are advising all poultry owners and producers to stay vigilant to protect their flocks from bird flu.
“There is an increase in backyard and commercial flock detections around the United States and Canada,” said state veterinarian Dr. Jane Lewis. “This happens as wild birds begin their annual migration southwards. It is imperative that everyone involved in poultry production review their biosecurity practices to ensure the health of their birds.”
The disease has been described as highly contagious and often fatal to chickens. Human infections with bird flu are rare and usually involve prolonged exposure to sick or dead birds. According to the CDCbut most are fatal when they occur.
Officials say the facility is being quarantined and the herd is being depopulated to prevent further spread of the disease.
The virus was first detected in a New London County backyard non-commercial chicken flock in March. Officials said multiple other avian flu cases have since been confirmed in wild birds, mostly waterfowl and raptors.
The USDA announced that highly pathogenic avian influenza was found in CT. There are currently no public health threats to humans.
