Receipt of regular vaccines may predict COVID-19 vaccination status

Adults who receive influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are more likely to receive COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.

Adults who received influenza and pneumococcal vaccines were more likely to also receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a study presented at IDWeek 2022, October 19-23 in Washington, DC.

With the 2022-2023 flu season kicking off and the availability of bivalent COVID-19 boosters, pharmacists across the country have encouraged their customers to get both vaccines. However, little research has been done on whether COVID-19 vaccination is associated with other routine vaccinations.

Researchers enrolled patients 18 years and older who were admitted to Emory University Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta, Georgia, with symptoms of an acute respiratory infection. Patients were interviewed and medical records reviewed to collect demographic information, medical history, previous vaccination history, and social behavior during the pandemic.

Investigators enrolled 1056 patients with available vaccination records. Within this cohort, 509 patients (48.2%) had received at least one dose of her COVID-19 vaccine. Researchers found that patients who received the flu vaccine were more likely to have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine compared to those who did not (71.6% vs 35.4%) P. =<.0001; adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 3.3; 95% CI, 2.4–4.4).

Furthermore, patients aged 65 years and older who received the pneumococcal vaccine were more likely to receive at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine compared with those who did not (75.9% vs. 48.8%).% P. = <.0001; aOR: 3.0; 95% Cl, 1.8-5.1).

Findings show that influenza and pneumococcal vaccination are also strongly associated with COVID-19 vaccination, the researchers conclude: Reduces the burden of respiratory diseases. ”
