Early rise of respiratory virus in children overwhelms some hospitals

The surge in respiratory illnesses in children is beginning to strain hospitals.
An initial increase in seasonal influenza activity has been reported in most regions of the United States, with the highest levels of influenza being reported in the southeastern and central-southern regions of the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Additionally, hospitals are seeing an increase in cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a common cold virus that can be associated with severe illness in young children and the elderly.
Hartford’s Connecticut Children’s Hospital is overbooked for children admitted with RSV. WTNH report.
Monica M. Buchanan, senior director of strategy and corporate communications at Children’s Hospital of Connecticut, told CNN: “We’ve been looking somewhere on the 15 to 25 line on average. [Emergency Department] nights of the last two weeks.
Buchanan said hospital leaders will meet with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the National Guard to begin a logistical review to place a mobile field hospital on the front lawn, and will make a final decision on Thursday for further approval. A lot of work is planned.
“Certainly in Tohoku, I think this is unprecedented,” said Dr. Juan Salazar, executive vice president and attending physician at Children’s Hospital of Connecticut. WVIT“The sheer number of patients makes it difficult to admit everyone who needs hospitalization through normal means.”
Monitoring data collected by the CDC Elevated RSV Cases have increased nationwide in recent weeks, and PCR-detected cases have more than tripled in the past two months and are nearing last year’s peak. Get data from 75 counties, representing about 9%.
The increase in cases is also coming sooner than doctors usually expect.

The medical director of the University Medical Center and the National Infectious Diseases Foundation told CNN.
The CDC says an annual flu vaccine is the best way to prevent influenza and recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get the flu vaccine.
