NHS advances deployment of Bayer’s darolutamide for prostate cancer

of England, UK’s National Health Service (NHS) expedited deployment of BayerA new life-prolonging drug, darolutamide, treats the most advanced type of prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

The latest development makes the NHS the first European healthcare system to offer this drug to prostate cancer patients.

About 9,000 men with prostate cancer are eligible for this treatment.

Darolutamide is given as a tablet along with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and docetaxel chemotherapy.

Data from the ARASENS clinical trial, conducted in approximately 300 locations worldwide, including various NHS hospitals, showed a 32.5% reduction in mortality in subjects receiving the combination therapy compared to ADT and docetaxel alone.

Darolutamide works by blocking androgen receptors on cancer cells, which in turn blocks the effects of testosterone, which allows cancer cells to survive and replicate.

It is already available on the NHS under the brand name Nubeqa for patients with localized prostate cancer.

It is the fifth cancer treatment offered by the UK’s NHS as part of an early national access agreement.

The deal follows the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) granting approval for darolutamide under its global collaborative project Orbis.
