‘Triple Demic’ Inspires Changes to CDC Masking Guidance
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has changed its indoor masking guidance due to the triple threat of RSV, influenza and COVID as winter approaches. However, masks are not obligatory.
San Jose, California – and San Jose‘s Christmas in the Park event saw families enjoy dazzling lights, kid-friendly rides and festive performances. Outdoor events are a holiday favorite, but this year some people wore masks to enjoy the celebration.
“The flu numbers I read today are still very high. I’m still paranoid about COVID and getting sick,” said Michael Clinkscales of San Jose.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranks Santa Clara County in the “high” stratum for COVID infections. Influenza and respiratory syncytial virus cases are also on the rise, with a triple epidemic occurring just in time for the holiday season.
The CDC recommends wearing a mask indoors and in public in Santa Clara County and keeping your immunizations up to date.
“I never stopped wearing masks,” says Clinkscales. “I think I will continue for a very long time.”
Stanford University sent a notice to students on Monday, saying that COVID, flu, and RSV are on the rise. Students traveling during breaks are asked to wear and test their masks indoors before returning to class.
In San Francisco, COVID is in the CDC’s “low” tier.
Monica Gandhi, Ph.D., infectious disease expert and professor of medicine at UCSF, said:

Dr Gandhi said the flu hits the most vulnerable people hard, including very young children and the elderly. Influenza has become more prevalent this year than usual, and many people may not have been vaccinated.
“Children have not had the flu in the last few years, nor have adults. It’s not expensive,” said Dr. Gandhi. .
