Digital rectal exam may miss early prostate cancer: study

Investigators enrolled 46,495 men who were screened for prostate cancer at age 45 between 2014 and 2019 to participate in the PROBASE trial. Half of the men had a digital rectal exam (DRE), in which a health care professional uses a finger to check the prostate for lumps.or unusual swelling, followed by prostate specific antigen Blood test 5 years later at age 50. The other half she was 45 years old and only recommended her PSA test.
Principal investigator Agne Krilaviciute, PhD, and colleagues found that the PSA test detected four times as many cases of early-stage prostate cancer as a digital rectal exam alone.
“One of the main reasons for prostate cancer screening is to detect prostate cancer as early as possible in patients,” said Krilaviciute, a researcher at the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum) in Heidelberg. said in a news release. “Our study suggests that DRE is not sensitive enough to detect these early-stage cancers.”
Researchers suggest using other tools to screen for prostate cancer in men, such as PSA tests and MRI scans, instead of digital rectal exams. Presented at the European Urological Association Annual Meeting.
Of the 23,194 people enrolled in the delayed PSA group, 6,537 had a rectal examination. Within this group, 57 had suspicious findings and underwent biopsy. Three of them were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
